Help Google Find Your Content

One of the most important things to keep in mind when writing content for your website is that we need to help Google find your content. For best results, starting off by making sure your content is relevant to your audience is important. Googlebot is Google’s website crawling bot (many times referred to as a “spider”). Googlebot discovers updated pages to be added to the Google index. Many bloggers publish “new” content without realizing there are a few things they need to include to have those blogs be found by searchers. Afterall why put in the time and effort into writing content if it’s not going to be found and/or seen as relevant by Google?

Why Updated Content is Important

According to Andrey Lipattsev, Search Quality Senior Strategist at Google, content is one of the most important Google ranking factors. Google crawls billions upon billions of landing pages, but not all of them will be crawled leaving some sites missed. When the Googlebot does crawl your site, it will check to see if it’s been updated and it’s sole purpose is to seek relevant content for searchers. It’s important to consistently publish fresh content that is up to date, revised and edited, and most importantly valuable to readers which in turn will lead to higher rankings. If you don’t update your existing content on-site and if Google crawls your website with old content, your website will be looked at as less engaging resulting in lower rankings, and higher bounce rates.

Best Ways to Optimize Your Blog Post

So what are the best ways to optimize your blog post for SEO & to increase engagement? In order to do this, we need to make sure to include various optimization tactics within the content. Although Google has over 200 ranking factors that are built within their ranking algorithm, factors of their algorithm always change. We can say however not all ranking factors are created equal and you can certainly maximize your Blog SEO efforts by focusing on these ranking factors as referenced below:

  1. Proper Usage of Keywords
    1. Identifying the right keyword targets is extremely important to SEO. Including appropriate and relevant keywords within your blog content, and in the headers help break up the content as well. You can start by collecting keyword research which will help determine which keywords are likely to drive traffic to your blogs. Here are some great Keyword Research resources.
  2. Implementing Meta Tags (Title Tags, & Meta Descriptions)
    1. A Title Tag shows up in two places. The actual Blue link above the snippet in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page), and the text in the browser tab. Every Title Tag should be unique for every page so it’s not seen as duplicate content by the Googlebot (which can negatively affect rankings).
    2. Searchers online are more likely to click through from the SERP if the Title Tag is well written and relevant to their query. To increase CTR (click-through-rate) for blogs, it is important that both the Title Tag & Meta Description is relevant and most importantly intriguing. Meta Tags play a very important role in SEO since they are visible to search engines, and these make it easier to find pages that are relevant to a searcher’s query.
    3. One of our team’s favorite WordPress SEO plugins that easily allows you to update both your Title Tag & Meta Description is the Yoast SEO Plugin.
    4. A Meta Description is simply a summary of the content and is looked at as “sales text” to help encourage searchers to click on your page.
  3. Internal Linking
    1. Internal linking is simply hyperlinking appropriate keywords of text within your content to other relevant pages within the same domain. For example if you had a blog post introducing your company, you can very easily hyperlink learn more “about us” to your about us page (if applicable). These internal links help navigate your website visitors around your site.
    2. The more blog posts you have with internal links directing visitors to other pages within your website, the better chances of getting the search engines to find you and gain more traffic to your website.
  4. Alt Tags (For Photos)
    1. Adding Alt Tags is a silent SEO effort since you don’t see them but it has some strong impact to the search engines. Alt Tags are important to SEO since it’s the only way a search engine knows what the image on a page contains since it can’t read an image by itself, and relies solely on Alt Tags. Another pro is that adding Alt Tags optimizes photos which in turn attracts more traffic from Google Image Search. Many times, by default, when loading an image onto your website via the CMS (content management system such as WordPress, Drupal, etc.) an image has no alt text.
